21 Learning Log
You will observe that I have to define what a sentence and what a paragraph is. Half the student sin the class simply refused to write a learning log on class time. A few rewrote or retyped these at home. Those handed in ranged from well-crafted summaries to incomprehensible and incomplete sentences.

Theme: The mechanics of doing a learning log
Introductory or Topic Sentence _______________________________________
_____The idea of a learning log is to help you summarize what you have learned in class today in order to master the knowledge of the subject. A topic sentence introduces the main idea.
________________________________________________________________Body ____________________________________________________________ ______The next section between the introduction and conclusion consists of three to five sentences that give some basic facts and information to illustrate the main idea introduced by the introductory sentence. A sentence consists of a subject (The Romans), a verb (conquered, sometimes modified by an adverb (easily), and the complement, which is acted upon (the Greeks). Subjects or complements may be modified by adjectives (determined Romans easy-going Greeks). An indication that one has written a paragraph is to indent (skip five spaces) the beginning and to skip a space to start a new paragraph. An outline is not a substitute for a sentence or a paragraph. One sentence, a few words, or a handing in the entire set of notes you took for the class is not a substitute of writing a complete learning log of five to seven sentences (that includes introductory and concluding sentences). It is best to write the learning log right after class while the lecture is still fresh in your mind. Finally, one should hand in the learning log in a timely fashion...It helps to proofread what you write and not just rely on spell-check. Hastily scribbled notes handed in a week after they are due will not do too much to help you get a better grade in class.

This sentence may begin with the phrases: In conclusion, In summary, As a result, etc.
________________________________________________________________Those students who decide to leave early instead practicing a new skill deserve the low grades they get. They only cheat themselves. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
